Oracle said Tuesday that Oracle Cloud Infrastructure will add Google Tensor Processing Units, OpenAI’s Jalapeño chip and Cerebras hardware, according to CNBC and an Oracle announcement at Oracle AI World in Las Vegas. The TPU move is the first time Google’s custom AI chips will be offered on a hyperscale cloud outside Google, Oracle and CNBC said.
Reuters reported that Oracle and Nvidia are expanding OCI Superclusters with Nvidia Vera Rubin systems to “multi-gigawatt scale,” without disclosing deal value. Reuters also said Oracle plans to offer chips from Intel-backed SambaNova Systems alongside Cerebras for inference workloads, and that even Nvidia-based OCI systems will skip some Nvidia networking chips in favor of Oracle’s in-house Acceleron networking. Google TPUs on OCI will be available in calendar year 2027, Oracle said. A Cerebras spokesperson told CNBC the Cerebras deal is material but that the chipmaker will not disclose the scale because it is in a quiet period. Asked whether the wider silicon lineup marks a pivot from Nvidia GPUs, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure president Mahesh Thiagarajan told CNBC no, calling Nvidia chips “the best, most fungible.”
OpenAI intends to buy AI computing chips from Google, Bloomberg reported late Tuesday, citing a person familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified because the discussions are private. The person said final terms of any deal are not yet known, and OpenAI and Google declined to comment, Bloomberg said. Reuters, relaying a report from The Information, said the plan came without financial terms or other details, and noted that Google began selling its Tensor Processing Units directly to some customers this year. Both reports describe a plan, not a completed purchase.
On the software side, OpenAI and Oracle said Oracle is developing Oracle AI Workspace to bring Oracle applications and data into ChatGPT. Oracle separately announced Fusion Companion, which can run through supported AI tools such as ChatGPT. OpenAI said Oracle App Composer is designed to help teams build apps with Codex and other AI tools on OCI, and that Oracle AI Security Mesh uses OpenAI cyber models to help find and fix vulnerabilities. Oracle’s AI SMB Bundle pairs ChatGPT and Codex with NetSuite QuickStart and $12,000 a year in OCI credits. OpenAI said Oracle reported 130,000 active ChatGPT users and more than 95,000 active Codex users.
The chip expansion follows earlier Oracle AI infrastructure coverage, including a reported Tencent lease of about 100,000 AI chips on Oracle in Southeast Asia.
