OpenAI releases GPT-6.1 Terra, a cheaper computer-use model, at half the API price of GPT-6.1 Sol

OpenAI on Monday released GPT-6.1 Terra, a model the company describes as fast and efficient, built for visual reasoning, precise computer use and clearer writing. OpenAI called it “a significant step up from GPT-5.6 Terra.”

As of Monday, GPT-6.1 Terra is available to all Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex, OpenAI said. Developers can call it through the API as gpt-6.1-terra.

Pricing and specs

Standard API pricing is $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 per million cached input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. OpenAI said those prices are 50% lower than those of GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol.

The model’s developer page lists a 1,050,000-token context window, 128,000 maximum output tokens and a June 1, 2026 knowledge cutoff. It accepts text and image input and returns text. Prompts above 272,000 input tokens are billed at higher rates, and Batch and Flex prices are 50% lower than Standard, according to the page.

OpenAI’s benchmark claims

All performance figures below come from OpenAI and were not independently verified.

On Agents’ Last Exam, a benchmark of professional tasks that OpenAI used to measure computer use, the company said GPT-6.1 Terra at medium reasoning effort scores 15 percentage points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra at about one-third the cost.

On Terminal-Bench 4.0, which tests coding agents working from the command line, OpenAI said the model solves 50.3% of tasks at maximum reasoning effort, compared with GPT-5.6 Terra’s published score of 21.5%. The company said GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra remain the better choice for the most complex coding tasks.

On an internal benchmark of error-inducing prompts, the error rate at low reasoning effort fell from 53.6% with GPT-5.6 Terra to 16.7% with GPT-6.1 Terra, OpenAI said. At maximum effort, it said the rate fell to 4.3%.

Safety

OpenAI said GPT-6.1 Terra meets the Critical threshold in cybersecurity under its Preparedness Framework and keeps the protections developed for GPT-6 Astra. The company said more detail is in the model’s system card.

The release follows OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra and Luna launch in August and its GPT-6 Sol and Luna expansion in September.
