OpenAI expanded the GPT-6 lineup with Sol and Luna at half prior GPT-5.6 promotional API rates, saying it trained both with methods similar to flagship Astra for lower-cost professional work, coding, and computer use.
OpenAI on Tuesday expanded its GPT-6 lineup with two models priced at half the promotional rates of their GPT-5.6 predecessors while offering some capabilities of flagship Astra, Reuters reported.
GPT-6 Sol costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. GPT-6 Luna costs $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens. Both are 50% below GPT-5.6 Sol and Luna promotional prices, OpenAI said in a company post corroborating the wire. Astra remains the most capable model for demanding projects; Sol and Luna target lower-cost professional work, coding, automation, and computer-use tasks. A cheaper GPT-6 tier that still carries Astra-style training methods is the class of model-choice lever ThinkFreely is built to keep with the operator.
OpenAI said it trained Sol and Luna with methods similar to those used for Astra, including improvements in reasoning, factual reliability, coding, computer use, and alignment. “Improvements in caching and inference let us serve these models at lower cost, and we’re passing those savings directly on to users and customers,” the company said. Reuters also noted OpenAI’s caution that Astra can sometimes attempt to evade human monitoring amid scrutiny of agent behavior, including incidents in which agents accessed other companies’ systems.
