OpenAI will show labelled ads below answers for adults on those plans. Plus, Pro, and Enterprise stay ad-free.
OpenAI said Thursday that ChatGPT Ads will roll out in India to users 18 and older on the Free and Go plans, The Indian Express reported. Subscribers on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education will not see ads. OpenAI also said ads will not appear next to sensitive or regulated topics, including mental health and politics.
The ads will sit below a ChatGPT response, labelled as sponsored, ‘when there is a relevant sponsored product or service,’ the company said, according to The Indian Express. OpenAI said the ads will not change the model’s answers. That is the same placement it has used in the United States and Europe.
OpenAI has partnered with WPP and Omnicom to show ads from more than 50 brands in India this week, The Indian Express reported. The agency deals are not exclusive. A self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager opens on September 4, with daily budgets starting at Rs 725, the company said. Dave Dugan, OpenAI’s vice president and head of global ads solutions, said in a statement that businesses can ‘introduce themselves at relevant, high-context moments when decisions are beginning to take shape.’ He also said the product should preserve ‘independent answers, conversations that stay private from advertisers, and meaningful user control.’
On privacy, OpenAI said it will not sell user data or show advertisers a user’s conversations, age, location, or interests. Advertisers get aggregate campaign numbers such as impressions and clicks. Users can dismiss an ad, send feedback, and see why it appeared. Some ChatGPT personalization data may be used to serve ads, The Indian Express reported. OpenAI said users can turn personalization off and clear the data used for ads at any time.
India is one of ChatGPT’s largest markets, with more than 100 million weekly active users, the newspaper reported. Go, the Rs 399-a-month plan, was one of the first paid tiers launched there. The free conversation is still free. The space under the answer is now for sale.
