Bloomberg and CNBC say a six-year lease covers about 460 megawatts and Nvidia Vera Rubin chips, online late 2027.
Anthropic has agreed to spend about $45 billion over six years to rent AI cloud capacity from Nscale, according to Bloomberg, which first reported the deal. CNBC later confirmed the agreement.
Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter, said the commitment covers about 460 megawatts at Nscale’s flagship data center development in West Virginia. Nscale will use Nvidia’s Vera Rubin chips to serve Anthropic. Those systems are expected to start coming online late next year. CNBC, citing two people who asked not to be named, put the same figures on the table: roughly $45 billion, around 460 megawatts, Vera Rubin, and a facility due at the end of 2027. Nscale is a UK-based AI infrastructure company, CNBC reported.
This is a compute lease, not a chip purchase and not a data-center acquisition. Anthropic is paying for power and Nvidia hardware that is not yet installed. Bloomberg framed the move as Anthropic locking in capacity ahead of a public listing. CNBC noted that Anthropic confidentially filed an IPO prospectus with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in June, and that it is under pressure to justify a $965 billion valuation.
The company has been buying infrastructure in bulk. CNBC said Anthropic has announced deals this year with Advanced Micro Devices, SpaceX, Google, and Broadcom after saying earlier that demand for Claude had put ‘inevitable strain’ on its systems and hit reliability and performance at peak hours. The Nscale contract is another capacity purchase on that list.
None of the named sources said the West Virginia campus is running today. Late 2027 is the online date they were given. Forty-five billion dollars is the bill they were given. In this market, that is how you reserve watts that do not exist yet.
