He also stood by opposition to regulating AI and said the United States “totally rejects any attempt to construct a globalist scheme to control… artificial intelligence.”
Trump compared AI-safety warnings to climate claims he has called a hoax, saying the same people who warned everyone would be dead from global warming “are now saying that AI is going to kill us all.” The rebrand follows other Trump administration renamings, including the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” and, in August, Lake Ontario as “Lake America” amid a Canada trade dispute, AFP noted. Ahead of the assembly, leaders of more than 20 mostly European countries urged binding safety measures for advanced AI. The United States and China did not endorse the idea. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the UK would push for a single set of global AI principles and standards during its 2027 G20 presidency and announced an AI defense partnership with Washington to detect cyberattacks on critical infrastructure. French President Emmanuel Macron proposed pooling investment for a cutting-edge open-source AI model so Europe does not become “the vassal of one of the great powers.”
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for US-China dialogue on AI akin to Cold War channels for shared existential risks.
