President Donald Trump said on Truth Social that Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton is the White House artificial intelligence czar and will lead a new “Super Intelligence Force,” NPR, CNBC, and CBS News reported Sunday. The announcement confirms the appointment after days of expected-to-name reporting.
Trump said the force will “ensure that America continues to lead the World in Super Intelligence” and will “coordinate the Federal Government’s engagement with Consumers, Public Interest Groups, Religious Organizations, Critical Infrastructure Providers, and Super Intelligence Companies,” according to the Truth Social post quoted by NPR and CNBC. He prefers the term “super intelligence” to “artificial intelligence.”
Alongside Clayton, the group includes Federal Trade Commission Chairman Andrew Ferguson, Pentagon research and engineering chief Emil Michael, and Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor, NPR, CNBC, and CBS reported. The task force will report to Trump and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
According to CNBC, the Super Intelligence Force will have 120 days to research and report on AI’s risks and opportunities and to offer recommendations on the federal government’s responsibilities. Anadolu Agency, citing Clayton’s comments to The Wall Street Journal, likewise said the force has 120 days to report on risks and opportunities and to determine the federal role. CNBC said the Journal first reported Clayton’s new role on Saturday.
Clayton was confirmed as DNI in July after previously serving as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York and as Securities and Exchange Commission chair. The naming follows last week’s White House meeting with frontier AI executives and a voluntary safety accord Trump called “morally binding,” CBS and CNBC reported. Separately, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said Sunday he would rename SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI to match the “super intelligence” wording, Reuters reported via Investing.com.
