OpenAI brings its frontier models and Codex to Google Cloud, its third major US cloud

Three cream clouds on a pale sky-blue background, the largest holding the OpenAI logo, with a small code-bracket tile docked beside it.

OpenAI’s frontier models and its Codex coding agent are coming to Google Cloud, the companies said on Wednesday, October 21. GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna are rolling out in an invite-only private preview in Google Cloud’s Model Garden, with general availability planned in the coming weeks, according to Google and OpenAI.

Customers will buy the models through Google Cloud Marketplace, and companies with Google Cloud spending commitments can draw those down for the purchases, OpenAI said. Google said all usage will appear on a single Google Cloud invoice. In the preview, select enterprise customers can build with the models through Google Cloud’s APIs and connect local Codex command-line and desktop workflows to Google’s Gemini platform, Google said. OpenAI said its models will also come to Google Antigravity and the Gemini Agent.

Google is pitching control for regulated industries. It said customer prompts and outputs stay within a designated data perimeter and are never used to train foundation models, that OpenAI models run on dedicated Google Cloud infrastructure, and that zero data retention and confidential compute options are coming soon. “We are focused on giving customers a broad selection of models, including those from OpenAI,” Google Cloud chief executive Thomas Kurian said.

The deal puts OpenAI’s models on all three of the top cloud infrastructure providers, CNBC reported. Microsoft’s exclusive license to OpenAI’s intellectual property ended less than six months ago, and Amazon unveiled plans to host OpenAI models the day after, according to CNBC. Reuters said OpenAI’s exclusive distribution arrangement with Microsoft expired in April. OpenAI said Microsoft remains its primary cloud partner.

The partnership adds another layer to a complicated relationship, Reuters noted: OpenAI and Google compete in core AI products and search, and Google already supplies OpenAI with computing capacity under a cloud deal struck last year. For OpenAI, which has grown fast on the consumer side, broader cloud distribution is part of a push to sell more to enterprise developers, CNBC reported.
