OpenAI has hired three former Patreon executives to anchor its product strategy for creators, The Verge reported on Wednesday.
Patreon cofounder and technology chief Sam Yam is joining OpenAI to lead Creator Product. He is bringing former Patreon product head Drew Rowny and engineering head Shannon Ma with him; both stepped down from Patreon in the past few weeks, according to The Verge. Yam said on X that the group will build with creators at OpenAI and share early access to new tools, pointing audiences to OpenAI DevDay next week. DevDay is set for Tuesday, September 29. Yam also linked an Altman post teasing another announcement this week, The Verge said.
The hire package puts the team associated with the modern creator-subscription economy inside OpenAI’s product org. The Verge framed the move as a signal that OpenAI is exploring creator monetization surfaces, given Patreon’s role in setting that subscription blueprint. For Patreon, losing Yam lands after the company announced an extensive user-feature overhaul roadmap and after laying off 20 percent of staff in January, as reported.
