OpenAI launches Astra for Law for firms and legal tech vendors

OpenAI on Thursday released a legal industry-focused version of GPT-6 Astra designed to help law firms and legal software providers conduct research, draft advice, and build custom applications for lawyers, Reuters reported.

The product combines Astra with an index of U.S. case law, statutes, regulations, and other legal materials, plus specialized instructions for legal analysis and writing. Legal AI vendors including Harvey and Legora will be able to build on Astra for Law.

Selected law firms will gain initial access through a program that includes protections for confidential client work. The launch lands in a crowded legal-AI market alongside Google, Anthropic, and Thomson Reuters offerings.

This brief covers OpenAI’s announced Astra for Law launch as reported by Reuters. It does not evaluate legal accuracy or advise lawyers on tool choice.
