OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI’s Grok all saw service disruptions on Thursday, Bloomberg reported at 11:35 a.m. ET, citing user reports and company status pages. Tens of thousands of OpenAI complaints hit Downdetector. OpenAI said it was investigating elevated error rates on ChatGPT and Codex.
An OpenAI spokesperson later told Newsweek a routing error starting around 7:43 a.m. PT “made ChatGPT and Codex unavailable for some users across platforms.” The company said a solution had been implemented and was still being monitored. Downdetector peaked near 35,000 OpenAI reports, about 80 percent of them for ChatGPT, Newsweek said.
Anthropic hit elevated errors the same morning on Claude, including Mythos 5.1, Fable 5.1, and Opus models, with impact across Claude.ai, Claude Code, Cowork, and the API. Newsweek logged more than 1,000 Claude Downdetector reports. An Anthropic spokesperson told Newsweek Claude was “fully back up after an infrastructure issue caused a partial outage” across those surfaces, with service restored at 11:16 a.m. ET.
Grok, built by xAI, also drew more than 1,000 Downdetector reports concentrated on the app, website, and generation tools, Newsweek reported. No xAI root-cause statement was in that account.
Google Gemini showed a smaller Downdetector spike of several hundred reports, Newsweek said. Google has not confirmed an official outage in the Bloomberg or Newsweek accounts.
Cloudflare told Newsweek it was “not experiencing any significant service disruptions” and that contrary reports were incorrect.
Three labs stumbled at once. Bloomberg and Newsweek did not establish a shared root cause.
ChatGPT got the biggest Downdetector pile. Claude said it was back by late morning. Grok’s spike is still a spike without an xAI autopsy. Concurrent does not mean connected.
