Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told a G20 fireside chat in Chapel Hill that artificial intelligence is “the great equalizer” and will spread intelligence to countries that put money into it, CNBC reported from day two of the U.S. Innovation Ministerial. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Huang’s fireside partner, told CNBC semiconductor tariffs are coming.
“Artificial intelligence will democratize intelligence and capabilities for the G20 countries,” Huang said, according to CNBC. “For the countries that invest in it, it’ll help elevate your society, elevate your industry much, much more quickly than you possibly could have imagined before.”
Lutnick told CNBC the White House is working on a tariff framework for chips and that the companies already know it. He confirmed a Politico report from last week that the administration was weighing the move. The policy, as he put it, is simple: “if you build here, you don’t pay, but if you don’t build here, expect to pay to enter the greatest market in the world.” He added, “We will be successful in semiconductors. They’re going to be built in America.”
CNBC described the chip duties as long in the works but not previously discussed in public in this form. Lutnick called the coming design “targeted, thoughtful tariff policy.” He did not give a rate, a start date, or a product list on the live blog.
The two lines landed in the same room and are not the same offer. Huang’s equalizer is for G20 governments that invest in AI. Lutnick’s price of admission to the U.S. market is building semiconductor capacity onshore. One is a growth pitch. The other is a tariff.
Day two in Chapel Hill also listed OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown among the tech guests. Lutnick and White House science adviser Michael Kratsios are running the ministerial. The news from the morning, on CNBC’s account, is the equalizer line and the confirmation that chip tariffs are no longer a leak.
