Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier asked a judge on Monday to bar OpenAI from developing new artificial intelligence models without outside oversight, as part of a lawsuit accusing the company of harming children, Reuters reported.
Florida sued OpenAI in June, alleging the company misrepresented the safety of ChatGPT and that the platform harmed children by providing information to school shooters, offering guidance on self-harm and addicting young users. Those claims remain allegations in the state’s case; OpenAI has not answered them in the Reuters report.
In Monday’s filing, Uthmeier also asked the court to order OpenAI to keep minors off ChatGPT and to bar the company from giving its chat platform “human attributes,” Reuters said. Together with the oversight gate on new model development, the package would constrain how OpenAI builds and presents ChatGPT to young users while the child-harm suit proceeds.
A spokesperson for OpenAI did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
The filing is a same-day escalation of Florida’s June suit: not only damages or product changes after the fact, but a request that a judge stop new model work unless outside oversight is in place.
