Apple says any developer can now build for Siri AI, with a customer launch in a few months

Apple said on Tuesday, Nov. 3, that a new Developer Preview in the iOS 27.3, iPadOS 27.3, macOS 27.3 and visionOS 27.3 betas “enables any developer to integrate their app with Siri AI,” according to an Apple developer announcement.

The preview uses App Intents, Apple’s framework for bringing app content and actions into the system. Apple said it lets any app tap Siri AI capabilities “including personal context understanding, onscreen awareness, natural language, and more,” so that Siri AI can carry out custom actions “from checking a delivery to booking a reservation to placing an order.”

For complex requests, Apple is introducing what it calls skills, which it said “let you teach Siri AI how to combine several actions into a single experience.” Apple also said Siri AI “can now surface any entity in the Spotlight semantic index, not just the ones that fit an existing schema.”

The Verge reported that, according to Apple’s developer documentation, users won’t have to name an app in a request while it is in the foreground, during a Live Activity, or in a conversation with Siri AI about the app. The Verge, citing 9to5Mac, said Apple previously made a smaller set of features available to outside developers.

Apple said it has started rolling out the new capabilities across many of its own apps, including Calendar, Files, Mail, Maps, Messages, Photos and Safari, so users can “find a coffee shop they visited last week or archive files that haven’t been opened in over a year.”

Apple called the release a developer beta and said customers will not get third-party integrations right away. The preview “provides early access before first shipping to customers in a few months,” with App Store submissions opening in the spring, Apple said. It said it will follow up “with more details about the terms and usage policies for experiences enabled through Siri AI.”

In a footnote, Apple said Siri AI is available in beta in iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS and visionOS 27.3 and requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled device set to a supported language. Siri AI is “currently unavailable in the EU in iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS,” Apple said, adding that it is working with the EU “in an attempt to find a path forward.” Apple said Siri AI is not available to users under 13.

The same footnote says certain Apple Intelligence features that rely on server-side models, including Siri AI, are subject to daily usage limits, and that “expanded access to such features will be available for a fee in the future.”

Apple brought Siri AI to the iPhone 18 Pro in September. In its latest annual 10-K, Apple warned that AI agents “may behave in unintended or unpredictable ways,” AI Tech Daily reported.
