Anthropic’s Model Hardware Standard lets AI agents run lab and factory hardware

Anthropic on Thursday opened a research preview of the Model Hardware Standard, a framework for AI agents to operate physical devices in scientific research and advanced manufacturing, Reuters reported.

The standard is meant to let agents run lab and factory instruments such as microscopes and robotic arms together, Anthropic told Reuters. The company said those agents could take on tasks from routine drug-discovery experiments to laser calibration on a quantum computer. MHS, it said, works with any device that has a programmable interface and lets devices and agents communicate across networks.

The aim, according to Reuters, is to help researchers and engineers run autonomous, round-the-clock workflows with less hands-on work. That is a software interface for hardware that already speaks a programming language. It is not a new Claude model and not a chip announcement.

Anthropic said it is sharing the preview with partners so they can build safety evaluations for agents that move real equipment. Reuters reported that the company plans to open-source the standard after those checks. Until then, MHS is a limited research preview, not a default on the lab bench.

Software agents have spent the past two years in browsers, terminals, and chat windows. This spec is Anthropic’s attempt to give them a common way to touch a microscope or a robot arm. The preview is the application form. Open source is the later promise, after the safety work.

The chatbot now has a framework for moving factory hardware. The labs still have to decide whether to plug it in.
