Anthropic on Thursday, Nov. 5, introduced Personal Finance in Claude, a beta feature that lets US subscribers securely connect bank and card accounts and ask questions about their own money.
The feature is rolling out this week on the Pro, Max and Ultra plans in the United States, Anthropic said. Plaid, which powers the account connections, said Claude’s access is read-only, so it cannot move money. Anthropic said Personal Finance “can’t move, manage, or invest your money” and “isn’t designed to give investment advice.”
For accounts a user chooses to connect, Claude can see the bank’s name, each account’s name, type and last four digits, balances and credit limits, and up to two years of transactions, Anthropic said. Users can ask where money went in a month and get spending sorted by category, check what bills remain before payday, or ask whether they can afford a purchase.
Anthropic said Claude can also flag issues that are easy to miss, “like charges that hit twice, unexpected fees, or a bill that’s crept up all year.” TechCrunch reported that Anthropic describes the tool as flagging duplicate charges, unexpected fees and steadily increasing bills.
Personal Finance has no ads or sponsored recommendations and does not offer credit cards, loans or savings accounts of its own, Anthropic said. When users chat with Claude in the Personal Finance hub, those conversations are not used to train Anthropic’s models, the company said. Outside the hub, a user’s privacy settings apply. Users authenticate with their bank through Plaid, so Claude does not ask for or see banking passwords.
The Verge and TechCrunch noted that Anthropic’s launch follows OpenAI’s similar ChatGPT personal finance tools in May, which also connect accounts through Plaid. Anthropic called Personal Finance “a first step” and said it is exploring how Claude could work alongside licensed professionals and regulated firms for larger money decisions.
