SoftBank closes final $10B OpenAI tranche, completing $30B follow-on

SoftBank Group executed the third and final $10 billion Vision Fund 2 tranche of its announced $30 billion OpenAI follow-on on October 1, 2026 (Japan time), completing the package and lifting SoftBank’s cumulative OpenAI investment to $64.6 billion, or about 13%, SoftBank said.

The close finishes three $10 billion preferred-share installments SoftBank mapped in February under a $730 billion pre-money valuation, with the first and second tranches dated April 1 and July 1, 2026 (Japan time), SoftBank’s February 27 follow-on announcement said. SoftBank said the third tranche was funded with proceeds from the foreign-currency senior notes it announced on September 24, the same record high-yield package covered in AITD’s SoftBank $11.1 billion bond-issuance brief.

Effective September 30, SoftBank canceled the remaining $10 billion of undrawn capacity under the $40 billion bridge facility it entered in March for the OpenAI follow-on. After that cancellation and a prior early repayment, SoftBank said all borrowings under the bridge have been repaid and no undrawn commitments remain.

Reuters, in Investing.com and Channel NewsAsia reprints, corroborated the completed $30 billion commitment, the $64.6 billion cumulative stake at about 13%, the notes funding, and the bridge undrawn cancel. The reprints also place SoftBank’s check inside OpenAI’s earlier fundraising wave that secured $122 billion in commitments at an $852 billion valuation, with Amazon, Nvidia, and SoftBank as anchors.

This brief is the CLOSE of SoftBank’s announced $30 billion Vision Fund 2 follow-on and the extinguishing of the related bridge, not a new OpenAI round or a re-litigation of the September bond sale.
