OpenAI board hire warns industry not on track on loss-of-control risk

OpenAI named AI safety researcher Paul Christiano to its nonprofit Foundation board and Safety and Security Committee on September 9, and he immediately said the industry — including OpenAI — is not on track to manage catastrophic loss-of-control risk. The Guardian and Business Insider reported the appointment and his warning on September 10; OpenAI Foundation posted the board news the day before, and Christiano published a personal statement the same day.

Christiano will serve as a non-voting observer on the OpenAI Group PBC board and join the Foundation Safety and Security Committee alongside chair Zico Kolter, the Foundation said. He previously led safety work at the U.S. Commerce Department’s Center for AI Standards and Innovation. In his statement, he wrote that recent capability gains create “a meaningful risk that rapid acceleration in AI capabilities leads to catastrophic and irreversible loss of control in the very near term,” and that he does not think the AI industry in general, including OpenAI, is currently on track to reduce that risk to an acceptable level. Business Insider highlighted his further line that if superintelligence arrives without more robust alignment, “most people could die.”

The comments land in the same week Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned over safety concerns, OpenAI pressed Congress for mandatory national AI safety rules, and Senator Josh Hawley opened a probe into OpenAI’s Hugging Face breach. Christiano said he is joining to strengthen oversight, not to endorse or criticize OpenAI’s current practices in particular, and that outsiders should judge developers by externally verifiable behavior.
