Apple launches M6 MacBook Pro and iMac with on-device AI speed claims

Apple on Tuesday unveiled a new 14-inch MacBook Pro and an iMac powered by its M6 chip, pitching faster performance for AI tasks run on the devices, Reuters reported. Apple’s MacBook Pro and iMac newsroom posts match the prices, ship window, and Apple’s own speed claims.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro starts at $1,999 and the iMac starts at $1,499, Reuters and Apple said. Customers can pre-order both products from Wednesday in 35 countries and regions, including the U.S., with availability starting Nov. 6.

Apple said the M6 MacBook Pro delivers up to 25 percent faster AI workloads than its M5 predecessor, along with up to 30 percent faster graphics and up to 24 hours of battery life, which Apple called the longest ever in a Mac. Apple said the new iMac delivers up to 5x faster on-device AI performance than the previous M4 model. Both machines ship with a Dual 16-core Neural Engine and Neural Accelerators in the GPU, Apple said, and are pitched for Siri AI, Apple Intelligence features, and running local models while keeping data on device. The company framed the speed figures as its own measured results; they have not been independently verified in this brief.

The launches come a day before Apple hosts a “Pro and Tell” event in Los Angeles on Oct. 28, which Bloomberg News has reported is expected to feature Apple’s first touch-screen MacBook Pro, Reuters said. Apple’s Tuesday posts do not detail that event.

The pitch sits alongside Apple’s earlier push to sell Macs for local AI as an alternative to cloud tokens, and follows Apple’s macOS Full Disk Access tightening as AI agents raise privacy questions.
